👨🏻🙋🏽👱🏾🙎🏿👧🏻 Issue #13: Dominican Day Parade, a Venezuelan peace icon, Latinx founders
THIS WEEK'S FIVE:
Wuilly is a LEGEND - his spirit and bravery are inspiring. Born in Venezuela to a poor family, he dropped out of school at 8 yrs old and later taught himself to play the violin by watching YouTube videos. As an adult, he played his violin at deadly protests against the Venezuelan President, eventually thrown in jail and tortured. Having survived that, he moved to NYC where he now gets to play his violin in freedom. His favorite spot to play is Penn Station because he gets to welcome visitors and tourists. :) Read his op-ed in the NY Times, which is basically a love letter to New Yorkers and NYC! I'm not crying, you are.. (And here's the video version of his op-ed).
For nearly three decades now, tens of thousands of Dominican New Yorkers have congregated every August to flaunt their ethnicity, their culture, and their resolve to affirm their belonging in the city. The parade was this past Sunday and the theme this year was "Our Youth, Our Future!" Dominican singer-songwriter Prince Royce, a Bronx native, served as this year's grand marshal. Check out some pics below or in the official website here.
Harlem Capital spent the past few months scraping articles, websites and LinkedIn to find Black and Latino founders who have raised over $1 million of venture funding. The Latinx founders raised a combined $794 million. Check out the slides below or the write-up here.
Raised in Miami by Dominican parents, Amara La Negra is a newly minted icon but to Spanish-language TV viewers, she’s been a star for years: as a child, she made regular appearances on Univision’s Sábado Gigante. With season two of Love & Hip Hop: Miami coming down the pipeline, a new EP on the way, a new partnership with workout app Apptive, a black doll collection due out this Christmas and a bedazzled loafers line in the works, she’s just getting started putting her mark on 2018’s cultural map.
